‘’ Week 4 and 5: Waves

This week we will be learning about waves. After learning the basic parts of a wave we will be looking specifically at light and sound waves.

Notes:

Many types of energy travel in waves.
Either a transverse wave (like light),
Lightwaves go up and down as they travel.
Or longitudinal waves (like sound), sound waves compress and stretch as they travel.

Crest - top of the wave.
Trough - bottom of the wave.
Amplitude - Height of the wave.
Wavelength -Horizontal distance between the crests or between the troughs of two adjacent waves
Pitch - how high or low sound is
Transverse - A wave that moves the medium in a direction perpendicular to the direction in which the wave travels
Longitudinal - A wave in which the vibration of the medium is parallel to the direction the wave travels
Investigating light
What is the fastest way to travel through the universe? -
A light vacuum.

What is light speed? -
299 792 458 m / s

Define optical science? -
Study of light.
What is fibre optics? -
A thin piece of glass or plastic light travels through.
Name the three instruments that help us see very small objects or objects far away.
Most things with lenses.
1 - Telescope
2 - Magnifying glass
3 - Microscope
Day 1 Activity: What is sound?:

A: Crest
B: Wavelength
C: Amplitude
D: Trough

What type of waves are the following examples? Transverse or longitudinal?

A slinky?  Longitudinal

A rope? Transverse

Car headlights? Transverse

Stereo sound waves? Longitudinal

Day 2 Activity What is light:

Light moves in straight lines, it can not bend around corners. This creates shadows and means that light can travel through some things but not others. We can describe objects as being opaque, translucent or transparent.

Identify whether the following objects are opaque, translucent or transparent:
  1. Window - transparent
  2. Cloud - translucent
  3. Can of coke - opaque
  4. Mirror - opaque
  5. A dog - opaque
  6. A glass of milk  -opaque
  7. Frosted glass - translucent
  8. A desk - opaque

  1. Moon - No
  2. Sun - Yes
  3. Mirror ball - No
  4. Match - Yes
  5. Cell Phone - Yes
